Born Under A Lucky Moon

The novel Born Under A Lucky Moon, while fictional, is based on real life events in my life. The story that takes place in 1986 is largely true. It noodled around in my head for decades until I knew I had to write it down just to stop thinking about it. I did compress some events to fit into a specific time frame.

Here are some of the questions my friends here in N. Muskegon have recently asked me about the book — in no particular order.

1. What is the book trying to say about families?

2. What really happened with Lucy’s pregnancy?

3. Why did Lucy originally elope?

4. Why did Lucy go through with the marriage in N. Muskegon? Have you ever done something similar for a person you barely knew?

5. What was Jeannie’s role in all of this? Was she just the observer?

6. How was Jeannie affected by growing up in this family? Did it help her? Or hurt her?

7. What was Evan’s role in the book?

8. Elizabeth was extremely organized in her business life. So why did Elizabeth stay married to her ne’er do well husband?

9. How did the Thompson family ultimately affect Chuck’s life?

10. Was it the Thompson family’s fault as to what ultimately happened to Chuck?

11. Did you identify with any one of the characters in the book? Why? (I am fascinated by the people who have posted the reasons they identify with one character or the other.)

12. Father Whippet was having affairs with older woman. Was he mentally disturbed? Did he think he was helping these women?

13. Why were these older women having an affair with Father Whippet?

14. What do you think ultimately happened to Father Whippet?

15. Why did Jeannie’s marriage to Walker fail? Walker was imperfect but was it ultimately Jeannie’s fault?

16. Why was Jeannie avoiding marriage to Aidan? Was it really her family’s past? Or was it her work? Or something else?

17. Have you ever had an experience at work or in life in general where the politics got to be too much? How did you handle it?

18. Do you think that movie stars really do behave in the ways depicted in the book?

19. What did Jeannie ultimately learn by the end of the book?

I can’t think of a twentieth question…

Have a great book club!!!
